Talk is Cheap, Cowboy.

Well, so much for radio silence--that lasted, what, about 15 minutes? I've hit a wall in the thesis work (surprise, surprise) and I thought I might finish up an entry I've been thinking about for a while.

Premise: Talk is cheap. When a person really stands for something, she will actively support a cause through financial, volunteer, or other contributions. Moreover, citizens have a responsibility to actively engage in causes that are meaningful to them. Otherwise, we're just freeloaders with no right to complain about any perceived injustice or flaws in the system.

So, it might tell me something about myself to list all the causes I currently support (or have supported in the past), and compare that with a list of groups I would like to suport in the future. Might that tell me where my heart lies, and where I am lacking in participation?

Groups I have supported in the past:
City at Peace ($)
American Film Institute* ($/membership)
WETA* ($/membership)
* will support again

Groups I currently support:
University of Oregon ($)
Virginia Tech ($)
Compassion International ($/sponsor)
Saratoga Foundation for Women (Volunteer)

Groups I would like to support in the future:
Human Rights Campaign
Amnesty International
Center for a New American Dream
National Public Radio

(Of course, this doesn't include my regular letter-writing campaigns to my local, state, and national government on all sorts of issues.)

Am I missing anything obvious?

Don't forget to set aside $ now to contribute to the old-age subsistence of your parents!

I like the idea of making a list of organizations I would *like* to support, but dont yet. For some time I have been charging myself a consumption tax on crap I buy that I don't need or that I know is not so great.

(I used to be a lot more dilligent in keeping track before comeing to Sweden). The plan was to find worthy causes to donate that money to, if possible, something that helps to offest the negtive impact my consoumption has. Unfortunatly, the money ends up going to the same charity, or, when I hear a news story or something it goes there on a whim (after a little background checkin... not that I can really tell if it is a good way to use the donation)

I somehow cant get off my arse to research the organizations I *really* want to support. (I still ahve not done anything with the info you sent about investing loooooong ago)

Thanks to this post of yours, I have just dedicated one week's worth of my post-graduation, sitting on my butt with no responsibility to-do list to researching places that should be graced with my support. The goal is to have a list of "I want to support these organizations"

widh me luck

What an interesting proposal. I think something like this might actually make me uncomfortably aware of the void between what I profess and what I actually support.

I'd like to think of my own list, but since I'm in the office on a Sunday night (reading blogs), that certainly shouldn't happen now. I would imagine my wish list would be much longer than my current/past lists.

My other thought is that the groups on your list say so much about the movements we support. I liked reading about the New American Dream. I currently support National Public Radio, which says mountains about what I spend my time listening to during the day. HRC caught me by surprise (but shouldn't have). I feel almost impotent in figuring out where to start with that issue. Ideas? I did call Kraft on Thursday and thank them for supporting the Chicago Gay Games. Yup, I'm on the listserv of the American Family Association for some reason. Donald Wildon's smug visage alone creaps me out when I get those. But it does help me know who to call that week (Proctor & Gamble, Microsoft, etc). Now I'll be getting Kraft recipies in my snail box. Maybe I'll learn to cook with Velveeta. Okay, look at my making your blog mine. I should go now.

p.s. - I've always loved your letter writing campaigns. *smile*

p.s.s. - I really do know how to write in paragraphs. It just won't let me.

Okay, apparently it does come through in paragraphs, but I promise it didn't when I previewed!
